Take the stress out of moving!
Here are 10 ways to make your next move a breeze!
We have compiled a list of 10 tips to make your next move the easiest yet! We understand how stressful moving can be and hope these tips can help you move like a pro!
-
Measure Everything!
Measure all your furniture, rooms, cabinets, and doorways to ensure that all your personal belongings will fit how you imagined in the space. Make sure you have a plan of how you want to lay everything out. Knowing where you want your furniture and belongings will make it easier to unpack.
-
Forward your mail.
Make sure to change your address through USPS, https://moversguide.usps.com/mgo/disclaimer, and call important places, such as the bank and credit card companies, to change your address directly. Make sure to track down any mail that might already be in transit, and alert your current landlord about any packages that might arrive. Ensure that you have left your forwarding address, as well as a reliable phone number, so they are able to contact you if they receive any mail.
-
Declutter!
Go through your closet and cabinets and get rid of anything you aren’t using. Rather it is an old sweater you haven’t worn in years or outdated spices, there is no need to bring it along to your new home. Donate any clothes, furniture, or non-perishable items, and throw away what might be expired. You will be surprised how much space these items take up. Trust us, you don’t want to carry extra boxes if you don’t have to!
-
Use household storage items for extra packing boxes.
That basket you store blankets in has to make it to the new place anyways. Use it as a moving box and pack it full of stuff! Baskets and bins make great moving boxes and allow you to save a little room and money while moving.
-
Use trash bags to transport clothes.
No one likes to take all of their clothes off the hangers and store them away in boxes, just to take them out and put them back on the hangers. Place trash bags around your clothes and loop the drawstring around the top of the hanger. This allows you to safely transport your clothes while keeping them on the hangers, and you are able to reuse the trash bags!
-
Ditch the bubble wrap.
Instead of spending money on bubble wrap, use items you already have in your home. Use washcloths, towels, blankets, pillows, and sheets to wrap delicate items, such as plates and glassware. This allows you to save money and space. You have to take your pillows anyway, might as well put them to use!
-
Use sandwich bags to keep hardware together.
Use sandwich bags to keep your hardware where it belongs. If you are taking the TV mount off the wall, slip the screws in a sandwich bag and tape them to the bracket to ensure you don’t miss-place the screws. This will make it easier to hang your items when you make it to the new place without searching for hardware!
-
Label and color-code!
Take the guessing out of moving and label every box and color-code by room. This will make it easier to know where every box is going once it arrives. Take inventory of what is packed into each box to ensure those moving your valuables know how to handle the assets.
-
Find free boxes.
Instead of spending money on moving boxes, reach out to local stores and ask for them to hold back boxes for you. Also, look on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace for individuals who are getting rid of boxes. You would be surprised at how many you could find!
-
Make arrangements early.
If you are planning to move, it is vital that you make arrangements early to cut down on stress and cost. If you are still looking for an apartment, it is important to start your search early, months before you plan to move. This will better your chances of getting a unit in your preferred location for your preferred timeline. If you already signed a lease, shop around for moving companies. Booking movers early can save your money and ensure you have movers on your preferred date. If you plan to move on your own, make sure you have the equipment and the man power. Ask family and friends in advance to make sure you have people to help you!
